Jawaharlal''s jail career. If one is permitted to call it so did not begin by actually jail going. In fact on 18th May, 1920 an externment order was served on him by the Chief Secretary of the UP Government to leave Mussorie because he was ''acting or about to act in a manner prejudicial to public safety."
This referred to his casual contact with an Afghan delegation which was staying in the same hotel as he. He refused to obey the order and it was unconditionally withdrawn on 15th June 1920! As an example of fantastic but brutal ways of law and order authorities in Indian States of those days, Jawaharlal''s arrest at Jaito with another person may be cited. They were cuffed with each other and led by a common chain held by a constable. They were paraded, through the narrow streets of the village and then to Nabha. It was only Jawaharlal''s sense of humour - he said they were like chained dogs -which was a saving dogs - which was a saving grace. A trial was held and Jawaharlal was sentenced to six months along with other Akali Jaitha people. But he was let off after the sentence was passed I similar was the case later in Kashmir where he was arrested and let off but not sentenced.
