Women’s ill-treatment in the 18th century:
- Girls under 18 years of age are married to the groom. This was also regarded as child marriage. Also now, under the age of 18, 20 percent of girls are married.
- But if the husband dies early, the ladies will have to survive as a wife the rest of their lives. The widows have been emotionally ill-treated by staying indoors and so on.
- The widows practiced Sati, i.e. leaping onto her husband's funeral pyres if they don't want to stay. Sati means virtuous women in reality. Upper caste people, though from the upper caste families, have also been treated rudely.
