In 1857, a new Enfield rifle was introduced

in the army.

• To prevent the iron cartridge from rusting,

it was smeared with grease.

• Before loading it, one end of the cartridge

had to be bitten off.

• It was rumoured that the grease used

was the fat of cows and pigs. For Hindus,

a cow is a sacred animal and Muslims are

prohibited from eating the flesh of pig so

the soldiers refused to bite the cartridge.

• Mangal Panday, who led the revolt, was

hanged.
