Double fertilization only occurs in angiosperms and this is one of the reasons for their success amongst other plant species.
Double fertilization has allowed angiosperms to store food (endosperm) only when the ovule is fertilized.
Through this mechanism, angiosperms are able to save energy as storing food as the endosperm takes a lot of energy and supply from the plant.
