Powers of General Assembly

Explanation:

General Assembly (GA) is the highest level of deliberative body of the United Nations (UN). It is composed of the delegations of all the member nations. Once in a year all the representatives of 193 UN member states get together at the UN headquarter at New York to discuss important global issues. In the assembly, they discuss and debate on issues like peace and security of the countries and admittance of new members. They also discuss the budget, establishment of subsidiary organs, the appointment of secretary-general, international co-operation based on economics, culture, education, and health fields. It is the main policy making and representative organ of UN.

The role of General Assembly are to  

  • oversee the budget of the United Nations,  
  • appoint the non-permanent members to the Security Council,  
  • receive reports from other parts of the United Nations
  • make recommendations in the form of General Assembly Resolutions.
  • to establish other subsidiary organs
