A buffer state is a country sandwiched between two competitive or potentially hostile superpowers. Its existence is sometimes supposed to deter them from fighting.

Poland and other states between Germany and the Soviet Union have been referred to as buffer states, both before and after World War II, when they were non-communist states.

Buffer zones are places constructed to help protect a certain conservation area, usually on the outside of it. To create a transition zone, resource usage may be legally or conventionally restricted within buffer zones, often to a smaller extent than in the neighbouring protected region.
