C3 photosynthesis is the major of the three metabolic pathways for carbon fixation by plants. This process uses the enzyme RuBisCO in relatively inefficient conditions, to fix CO2 from the air and obtain the 3-carbon organic intermediate molecule 3-phosphoglycerate.

The plants exhibiting C3 pathway are called C3 plants. About 95% of the trees plants and shrubs on Earth are C3 plants it is also called calvin cycle.

1. It results in the synthesis of carbohydrates from CO₂

2. It depends on the light  reaction for the supply of the assimiatory power that is required for carbon assimilation.

3. It is the primary source of organic food & food energy for all the living organisms.
