<b>When electricity is passed through the concentrate solution of NaCl( brine) , it decomposes to form NaOH, Cl2 and Hydrogen. this process is also known as chlor- alkali process due to the products form in this process, chlor for " chlorine " and alkali for NaOH.

2NaCl+ 2H2O----------- 2NaOH + Cl2 +H2

when electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride , it decomposes to give sodium hydroxide (NaOH) , chlorine & hydrogen. This process is known as Chlor alkalie process.

2NaCl (aq) + 2H2O ----> 2NaOH(aq) + Cl2(g) + H2 (g)
