Before David had left for Salem's House, he is allowed to visit Mr. Peggotty in Yarmouth for two weeks. Mr. Peggotty was his mother's housekeeper. He was a friendly and generous man.
Yarmouth was a beautiful coastal area where Mr. Peggotty's brother was a fisherman. He owned a boat which he converted into a house. There, he accommodated two orphans; Ham and Emily and a widow, Mrs. Gummidge.
David spent most of his time with the children at the boat. He developed close bonding with them. He even developed a crush on the little girl, Emily. His time there was delightful.
While at Salem's House, David missed the time he had spent at Yarmouth.

Answer:
This was set to be or planned to be a trip for him.
Explanation:
It was a trip supposed to keep David away from Clara, his mother, who was getting ready for her marriage to Murdstone.
While in Yarmouth, David found out that Pegotty's house was by the beach and their home was actually a big ship's wreakage. He meets Emily, a girl his age and falls in love with her.
