Soils are the life-infested weathering rind of the Earth. They’re formed in loose, fine-textured, geological parent material by:
accumulation of organic matter
weathering of the original minerals into new ones
movement of minerals from upper to lower horizons by the relentless percolation of water.
Describing soil layers or horizons is a language in itself[1]and consists of master horizons designations — O, L, V, A, E, B, C, R, M, and W — plus more than 30 lowercase suffixes for more detail, not to mention numbers to differentiate between similar horizons with subtle variations. Soils are a kind of recording device and soil profile descriptions are an attempt to communicate their history.
