glucose (6 carbon molecule) gets converted into pyruvate (3 carbon molecule) the it breakdown into 3 pathways -
1. in case of anaerobic organism, pyruvate gets converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide giving 2 ATP energy.
2. in the case of absence of oxygen in an aerobic organism, pyruvate gets converted into lactic acid and energy.
3. in the case of presence of oxygen in an aerobic organism, pyruvate gets converted into carbon dioxide and water giving 32 ATP of energy.
