The endoplasmic reticulum is made up of a network of membranes. They are sac like structures which are called cisternae. They are held together by the cytoskeleton. The cisternal space or lumen is enclosed within the phospholipid membrane. It is continuous with the perinuclear space but is separate from the cystosol.
