2. Economic exploitation of people in the form of taxes,  land revenue etc was another main cause of first war of independence.

3. Interference in the social and religious life of people also made Indians to turn against the British.

4. Discrimination in army with Indian sepoys made the sepoys to turn against the British.

The five main causes of first war of independence are as follows:-

1.POLITICAL CAUSES

(I)The revolt was the outcome of the widespread resentment against the British.

(ii)The Indian sepoys were dissatisfied

(iii)The common people of Delhi,

Lucknow,Gwalior wanted an end of the foreign exploitation

(iv)The policy of annexation of Dalhousie,created a fear among Indian rulers,so they also joined the revolt.

(v)The British signed many treaties with the kings and the Nawabs but violated them

2.ECONOMIC CAUSES

(I)The policy of economic exploitation and the destruction of the traditional Indian economic structure by the British.

(ii) The peasants were tortured or jailed on failure to pay the revenue in

time.

(iii) The common people faced unemployment and poverty.

(iv)About 60,000 soldiers lost their livelihood.

3.SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS CAUSES

(I)The British interfered in the customs and traditions of the people.

(ii) The spread of railways created further fear among the poor and illiterate sections of the society that they would lose their caste.

(iii)Indians were not allowed to travel in first class train.

(iv)The British looked down upon the Indians .

(v) The British followed a policy of racial discrimination.

(v)The British advocated a judicial system of equality but in reality it was biased.

4.MILITARY CAUSES

(I)The sepoys had helped the British but instead of recieving reward they were humiliated by the British.

(ii)There was discrimination between the Indian and the British soldiers.

(iii)It was made compulsory for new Indian recruit to serve overseas which they believed that overseas travel would lead to loss of caste.

(iv)The Indian sepoys were paid salary which were very much less as compared to the British sepoys.

5.IMMEDIATE CAUSE

(I) The cartridges of the new Enfield rifle had a greased paper cover which had be bitten off before the cartridge was loaded into the rifle which is said to have been greased with beef and pig fats.

(ii) This was refused by both Hindu and Muslims.

(iii) Many sepoys started the revolt after the arresting any execution of Mandal Pandey, an Indian sepoy who shot down his sergeant.
