Explanation: War of Independence 1857
- War of Independence was fought in 1857 which turned out to be an important event in the Sub-Continent`s history.
- The war was fought against the British by the Indians to do away with the dominance of the Britishers. It was also referred as Indian Mutiny, Indian Rebellion and also as Indian Revolt.
- The main reason for this war were political, social, religious, economical and military.
- Political Causes:
- The British saw its last major extension in terms of territory during the period of Dalhousie.
- In 1849 he announced that Bahadur Shah II successor had to leave the Red Fort.
- The annexation of Udaipur and Baghat were however rejected and were awarded back to their ruling houses.
- He wished to apply the Doctrine of Lapse to Karauli (Rajputana) which was then overruled by the Court of Directors.
- Social Causes:
- The British decided to do away from its policy of non-interference in the matters of socio-religious life of the Indians like Hindu Widow Remarriage Act (1856) , Abolition of Sati (1829).
- Christian missionaries were permitted to come to India and promote their mission.
- The Religious Disabilities Act of 1850 brought modification to the traditional Hindu law.
- Discrimination was prevalent among the Indian and British soldiers. The British soldiers behaved badly with their counterpart.
Religious Causes.
- In 1857, rumours started floating that the English cartridges were coated with animal fat. This created a rift between a low-caste sepoy who taunted a high caste sepoy for compromising his caste after biting the cartridge which was believed to be greased with the fat of cows and pigs.
Economic Causes:
- Under the British rule the country witnessed breakdown of the village self-sufficiency, rising of commercialisation in the area of agriculture which caused immense pain to the peasantry, de industrialisation and adoption of free trade policy led to overall decline of economy.
Military Grievances:
- The service condition of the Sepoys were highly affected during the extension of British power in India.
- They were made to work in areas which were far away from their homes and without receiving extra bhatta.
- The General Service Enlistment Act, 1856 fueled the military discontent as it was made compulsory for the Sepoys to cross the seas whenever asked.
- The free postage facility was withdrawn through The Post Office Act of 1854 .
