The following are the five popular techniques of rainwater harvesting used in different parts in India:
1. Rooftop rainwater harvesting: this is a traditional method now followed by the people of Rajasthan, Shillong and Meghalaya to store drinking water.
2. Guls and Kuls: these are constructed in rocky and hilly areas to divert water. These simple channels are usually followed in Western Himalayas.
3. Khadins and Johads: found in Rajasthan the Khadins and Johads are constructed by converting the agricultural fields into rain-fed storage buildings.
4. Inundation Channels: these channels formed in the floodplains of Bengal to water fields.
5. Tankas: these are constructed inside the main residence. They were attached to the slanted rooftops of the houses through a pipeline. Rain dropping on the rooftops would move down the pipeline and was deposited in these underground 'tankas'.
