A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. ... Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the capacity of the river channel, particularly at bends or meanders in the waterway. Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers.

• Floods are saif to occur when water rises above the safety level and overflows in the surrounding areas.

• This may lead to destruction of houses, farms, roads etc. and also result in death of animals and people living in these areas.

• The danger that they cause is known as flood disaster.

• In other words have a loss of life and property due to excess of water is known as flood disaster.

• Floods can occur due to various reasons such as heavy rainfall, cyclones, cloudburst, inadequate drainage system, bursting of dams covering of the word, melting of snow etc.

• Generally, floods are caused due to one or more unfavorable factors together.

Example : during heavy rains, a river may receive water at a faster rate than it can discharged into sea.

• Thus, a river may not be able to hold is extra water and overflow it banks, causing a flood in the surrounding areas.

• Most of the floods in India are caused by overflowing of the rivers during the South West monsoon season are called riverine floods.

• During a short span of 4 months India receives 75% of its total annual rainfall leading towards widespread floods.
