A food cycle was a period in which the annex members would only have one particular dish or type of vegetable to eat. For a long time they would eat nothing but endive, with sand, without sand, with mashed potatoes, endive and mashed potato casserole and so on. Then it was spinach, followed by kohlrabi, salsify, cucumbers, tomatoes, sauerkraut and that too everyday for lunch and dinner. Hunger necessitated such practices.
