Explanation:

The Ganga along with its large number of tributaries like Yamuna, Ghaghra, Gomti, Gandak, Kosi etc. are originating in the Himalayan mountains and flow through the centre of northern plains. On the other hand, the peninsular rivers such as Chambal, Betwa, Ken and Son etc. joining Ganga river system, also contribute to the formation of northern plains. After reaching West Bengal, Ganga splits into many branches like Hugli river which merges in Bay of Bengal.
