Griffin stayed in an inn in Iping. His arrival made everyone's tongue wagging. Griffin paid Mrs Hall, the landlord, in advance so she lets him off for his strange behaviours. One early morning, a clergyman and his wife woke up to the sound of money chinks coming from the study. When they opened the door, they found nobody there. Later that morning, Mrs Hall and her husband decided to investigate his room. Suddenly, Mrs Hall heard a sniff and the hat on the bedpost leapt up and dashed into her face. Then the bedroom chair sprang in the air and pushed them out of the room. Griffin was strongly suspected. Griffin became furious when he was inquired by Mrs Hall. He then took off his clothes and become invisible. When the constable was sent to arrest Griffin, he was knocked unconscious.
