Labeo Rohita

HABIT AND HABITAT

Labeo is bottom feeder and prefers to feed on plant matter including decaying vegetation. Its food comprises crustaceous and insect larvae in early stages (Mookerjee et al., 1946). Labeo rohita takes small percentages of mud which contains organic matter and various salts. This specie is available throughout Bangladesh. Ponds, rivers, rivulets are its main habitats (Bhuiyan, 1964).

CULTURE METHODS

Rui is regarded an excellent game fish and seems to put up a better fight in a river than in a tank. A number of inter specific and inter generic hybrids have been produced. It is very delicious food and supplies a huge amount of protein for the people (Rahman, 2005).

CIRRHINUS MRIGALA

HABIT AND HABITAT

Hatchlings of mrigal normally remain in the surface or sub-surface waters, while fry and fingerling tend to move to deeper water. Adults are bottom dwellers. It is an illiophage in its feeding habit and stenophagous; detritus and decayed vegetation form its principal food components, while phytoplankton and zooplankton comprise the rest.

CULTURE METHODS

In all the producing countries, almost all farmed mrigal is consumed in the local market. Governmental regulations and controls over the domestic marketing system are almost non-existent in these countries and demand and supply thus influence product value. Being the least preferred among the three Indian major carps, mrigal fetches comparatively low market prices, usually fetching 10-20 percent less than rohu or catla. However, consumer preference makes the prices obtained for these species always higher than those for common carp and Chinese carps.

Habit, Habitat and culture methods of Labeo rohita and Cirrihinus Mrigala

Labeo  rohita (Rohu)

Habit:

Bottom feeders.

During the early stages of its life cycle, it eats mainly zooplankton, but as it grows, it is mainly vegetarian feeding more on phytoplankton.

It breeds in June and July in running water.

Habitat:

Common in tropical and temperate regions.

Found in fresh water in ponds, lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

Culture:

Most important freshwater species cultured in India, Bangladesh and other nearby countries in the subcontinent.

Traditionally, it is cultured in small ponds.

It does not breed in ponds naturally, so induced spawning is necessary .

Cirrihinus Mrigala (Mrigal)

Habit:

A plankton feeds eating algae and small invertebrates.

It has a rapid growth rate.

It migrates, but only within fresh water.

Habitat:

Found in fast flowing streams and rivers, but can tolerate high levels of salinity.

Lives near the bottom as well as in mid-waters or near the surface.

Culture:

Traditionally, it is also cultured in small ponds.

Grown as a part of polyculture system with other two major carps - rohu and catla.

However, it grows more slowly than the other two.

It fails to breed naturally in ponds, thus induced breeding is done .
