Visit to Niagara

Helen visited Niagara Falls in March 1893, acompanied by her teacher Anne Sullivan. She found it difficult to properly explain her emotions when she stood at the place projecting from the Niagara Falls, feeling the air vibrate and the earth shake. Many people feel it strange how a blind and deaf girl should be fascinated by the beauty and wonder of Niagara falls. They asked Helen what their beauty or the music of water falling meant to her. They said that neither can she see the waves rolling up the beach or hear the sound of the falls. However, to her, they meant everything. She felt their presence just like she feels about goodness, religion or love i. e. some qualities which you can feel but cannot explain. She may not have been physically able to see or hear Niagara Falls but she was most surely able to experience the power of Niagara Falls.

Helen's visit to World Fair with Dr Bell

In the World's Fair, Helen found her childish desires showing themselves in reality. She visited the Midway Plaisance. It appeared like the "Arabian Nights", as it was stuffed so full of originality and interest. She found the India of her books in the curios bazaar with its Shivas and elephant - gods. She found the land of the Pyramids (Egypt) in a model of Cairo with its mosques and its long processions of camels. She also felt the lagoons of Venice, where they sailed every evening when the city and the fountains were lit up. She also went on board a Viking ship on which the seamen sailed and followed whosoever they saw, and fought them with their brains and power. She also studied a model of the Santa Maria, one of Colombus' three ships. Helen learned much about the process of mining diamonds at the Cape of Good Hope exhibit. She felt the artefacts of ancient Mexico in the basic tools and utensils and also the Egyptian mummies, which she was too sacred to touch. Thus, Helen made a 'trip round the world' during her visit to the World's Fair and enjoyed it too.
