Homer is the name given to the purported author of the early Greek poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. It is now believed by Classicists that they were composed by illiterate avoid (rhapsodies) in an oral tradition in the 8th or 7th century BC.
Virgil pulled heavily from the Greek epic tradition illustrated by Homeric poetry. Often, books 7-12 of the Aeneid are seen as corresponding to the Iliad while books 1-6 correspond to the Odyssey.
