It was Helen's first trip on ocean and first voyage in a steamboat. She was anxious and excited to reach the land because she was terrified of the noise made by machine. She explained the trip as "full of life". In Plymouth, Helen "was more interested in the great rock on which the Pilgrims landed than in anything else". She found the pilgrims to be heroes and admire their act of finding the land.
