Helen had met Mr. Jefferson a renowned theatre personality. He was famous for his portrayal of "Rip Van Winkle". Mr. Jefferson was so impressed by Helen's interest and knowledge of theatre that he let her touch his face. This helped Helen understand exactly how Mr. Jefferson looked. When Keller was in Boston she had seen a performance of "The Rivals" by Mr. Jefferson. Helen was a theatre enthusiast and was also an excellent critic.
