About 300 million years ago, there were dense forests in low-lying wetland areas on the Earth. As the trees died, they too got covered. This process went on for centuries. Sometimes earthquakes and volcanoes buried entire forests deep down in the Earth. The high temperature and high pressure inside the Earth slowly converted the buried vegetation into coal.

Uses of coke are :-

a) It is almost pure form of carbon. It is a good fuel and burns with no smoke. It is also used to reduce metal oxides, such as iron and zinc oxides, to get the metals.
