there are many types of mechanical weathering and they occur differently of example thermal shattering is an example of mechanical weathering

thermal shattering occurs usually in hot deserts were there is high temperatures during the day and cold temperatures during the night

this will affect the the granite rocks which are multimineralic  that they are made up of different minerals which are quartz and feldspar and others which have different cooling rates

so when the granite rock is heated it cools at a different rate leading to the formation of vertical and horizontal crackers because it cools at different rate and the continuation of this process results in mechanical weathering
