At a mass meeting the day after the storm, people elected a committee to direct recovery efforts
Explanation:
- A hurricane of magnitude 4 devastated Galveston, Texas, on 8 September 1900, killing an estimated 6,000-8,000 people. A 15-foot storm flooded the city at less than 9 meters above sea level, damaging multiple homes and houses.
- Galveston's leaders had taken many crucial measures to rebound from the hurricane and keep the disaster from repeating. First, a new form of city government with strong central control was set-up to deal with the economic recovery of the region.
- The relief committee organized quickly to take care of the most urgent needs of the survivors. As the story of the city's tragedy spread, the world responded
- Money came from New York's millionaires, from Georgia's black churches, Donations came from labour and fraternal organisations, religious groups, and thousands of individuals. In all, donations surpassed US dollar 1.25 million.
- The Central Relief Committee paid for construction of 483 new houses and the furnishing of part-financial assistance for repairs or restoration of 1,114 homes, in addition to the immediate rehabilitation, restoration and feeding, sanitation and shelter needs of the survivors of the disaster..
- The commission, which assigned three engineers to establish a plan to protect Galveston from more hurricanes, obviously gave the most importance to recovery.
- Then a massive wall ( a seawall) was designed to turn storm waves around. Perhaps the most impressive move was to increase the level of the entire city in certain places by over 16 feet to ensure minimal flooding.
