Steps for obtaining jute fibres from the jute plant

Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of jute plant. Jute plants are harvested and kept immersed in slow running water. Thus, the stems slowly rot. The rotten tissues of the stems become soft whereas the fibre parts of stem is still harder. So, this soft, rotten mass of plant stem is separated from fibres. This process is done by farmers by hands. This is called retting. Now, these separated fibres are washed in running water and are hung for some time to dry.

India is the largest producer of jute Bangladesh place is second in jute production. It is also cultivated in Nepal, Pakistan and Thailand. In India, the main reason where jute is cultivated are Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Almost 85% of the world jute cultivated is done in Ganges delta.
