There are a lot of processes involved in making jute fibres from jute plants mentioned below.

Harvesting of jute plants:-

★Retting of the stems:-

During resting of the jute plants, the stems of these plants are tied into bunches. The bunches are kept in stagnant water for a few days. During this period , the stems rot and a gum like substance that binds the stems together get destroyed . This process is called retting.

Fibres are then separated from manually (done with the hands). After this , the fibres are dried out in the sun for 3-4 days. Jute fibres are then sent to the jute mills.

★Properties of Jute:-

Jute fibres are durable, strong but very rough. They have very high tensile strength . All these properties make them a multipurpose usage thing. Since these fibres are very rough they are not used for making clothes . The various purposes for which jute is used include bedsheet, carpets, mattress etc.
