describe how metal oxides and non-metal oxides are different with an example
Answers
Answer:
ACID + BASE = SALT + WATER
ACID + METALLIC OXIDE = SALT+ WATER
NON-METALLIC OXIDE + BASE = SALT + WATER
1) Metallic oxides are basic in nature because they react with dilute acids to form salt and water. They also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature because these metal hydroxides release OH- ions in solution.
Example: Sodium hydroxide gives sodium carbonate and water when it reacts with carbon dioxide. 2NaOH + CO2 ⇨ Na2CO3 + H2O
2)On the other hand, non metallic oxides react with water to form acidic solutions which liberate H+ ions in solution. Therefore, non metallic oxides would be acidic in nature.
Example: Calcium is a metal, thus calcium oxide is a metallic oxide which is basic in nature. When an acid; such as hydrochloric acid; reacts with calcium oxide, neutralization reaction takes place and calcium chloride; along with water; is formed. 2HCl + CaO ⇨ CaCl2 + H2O
