Hey there !
Rainwater harvesting means capturing rain when it falls. It is done to meet the increasing demand of water as also to recharge the ground water. People living in urban areas have realized the importance of traditional rainwater harvesting methods like the rooftop storing method. The level of underground water in most of the urban areas has gone down much because of the increasing population, industrialization etc.
In Gendathur village, Mysore, about 200 households have adopted the rooftoprainwater harvesting method, thereby making village rich in rainwater. The Tamil Nadu government has made it compulsory for all the houses to have rooftop rainwater harvesting structures.
Hope it helps you !

Modern adaptations of traditional rainwater harvesting include:
1️⃣ 'Rooftop rainwater harvesting' is practiced in semi-arid areas of Rajasthan to store drinking water.
2️⃣ In hills and mountainous regions people build diversion channels like that in the Western Himalayas for agriculture.
3️⃣ In arid and semi-arid regions, agricultural fields were converted into rain fed storage structures that allowed the water to stagnate and moisten the soil like the ‘Khadins’ in Jaisalmer and the ‘Johads’ in other parts of Rajasthan.
4️⃣ In the flood plains of Bengal, people developed inundation channels to irrigate their fields.
5️⃣ Bamboo drip irrigation system is also being used in Meghalaya and other states in the North-East of India.
