Shylock was a Jewish money lender who hated Antonio since he belonged to Christian community and lended money without charging any interest. Once Bassanio wanted some money but Antonio was incapable of providing it therefore he borrowed money from Antonio and kept himself as guarantee.

When it was the time to return the money back Antonio was insolvent and could not return the money with this Shylock demanded for a flesh of pound from Antonio's body(as stated in the bond.)

A trial took place in the court of Justice in Venice.Neither the Duke nor Portia(disguised as a doctor of law) could convince him even though he was offered 12 times the amount of money stated in the bond I.e.,36 ducats, but Shylock was a stubborn man he only wanted Antonio's pound of flesh as his intentions were full of malice. Here Portia used her clever wit and turned the tables against Shylock , Portia then gives Shylock a knife to retrieve the pound of flesh but mentions that the law will not allow a drop of blood. She tells Shylock that if Antonio bleeds during the operation, the Venetian court is entitled to confiscate his land and property. After Shylock says that he would gladly take three times the payment, Portia tells him that he must enact justice. She also tells Shylock that if he cuts more or less than a pound, he will be sentenced to death.

One of the play's most crucial scenes is the trial scene. The setting comes from a James Bond story in which Antonio gave Shylock permission to take a pound of flesh from his body if he didn't pay the debt within three months.

Shylock is resolved to exact revenge on Antonio based on the bond, even if the time has passed. In the Venice court, the action begins. Bassanio's offer of 6,000 ducats and Duke's plea for mercy failed to sway Shylock.

Portia then enters the court dressed as a male attorney and is allowed to present her argument. Her supplications for mercy and other requests were likewise ineffective.

Finally, Portia gives Shylock permission to remove exactly one pound of flesh from Antonio's body without spilling a drop of blood; any less or more would result in the state seizing all of Shylock's assets.

Shylock immediately flinches and pleads for compassion. If Shylock converts to Christianity, refrains from engaging in usury, and gives his riches to Lorenzo and Jessica, Antonio advises forgiving him.

Shylock, who is devastated, agrees to these terms and leaves for home. The sequence has a lot of dramatic weight.

It is the culmination and climax of the Bond story; while it unfolds, the audience and readers are kept spellbound. There is also a meeting between two outstanding characters.
