Himalayan mountains is formed by the collision of tectonic plates. The mountain formation primarily occurs in three stages that began about 50million to 70million years ago and most recently occoured about 6,00,000 years ago. The tectonic plate still moving, and mountain range continue to rise, the movement occur at the rate of about 2centimetre per year

million of years ago, the Himalayas were occupied by a geosyncline known as Tethys . it was sandwiched between two long landmasses ... Angara land and Gondwanaland land . the Tethys sea stretched over the northern plains in East west direction . for million of years , sediments were deposited in Tethys sea . these sediments were folded to form Himalayas . the land masses of Angara land and gondwana land drifted slowly towards each other, the horizontal forces worked from two opposite directions resulting in compression. it led to shrinking of the Tethys sea .
the Tethys plate was driven northwards and pushed beneath the Eurasian plate. when the two plates came closer , the Tethys sea 's crust fractured . the sediments buckled and folded to form the mighty fold mountains of the Himalayas. it has been observed that the Himalayas are still rising
