The Northern plains were formed by role of major three rivers - the Ganga , the Indus and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. Due to the alluvium depositions in a vast basin lays in foothills of the Himalayas or Shiwaliks the Northern plains is formed of alluvial soil.
*characteristics of the Northern plains*
1. Due to Himalayan rivers the Northern plain is densly populated and vegetation is well adequate.
2. The rivers from the Northern plains are involved in depositions, thus in lower parts due to gentle slope the velocity of river decreases which forms reverine islands.
3. As the Northern plain is having adequate climate and temperature it plays a vast role in agriculture and is the most important part of country ( India) agriculture.
