Question :-

Describe how the two figures at the right are alike and how they are different. Which box has a larger lateral surface area?

Given :-

  • Diameter of cylinder = 1cm

  • height = 7cm

  • Side of cube = 7 cm

To find :-

  • Which box has larger lateral surface area?

Solution :-

The two figures given are cylinder and cube.

Both figures have same height.

__________

  • Cylinder: d = 1 cm, h = 7 cm

  • Cube: side= 7 cm

Both of the figures are different in shapes.

Lateral surface of cylinder

= 2πrh

= 2 ×  \dfrac{22}{7} ×  \dfrac{7}{2} × 7

= 154  {cm}^{2}

__________

Lateral surface of the cube

=  {(4l)}^{2}

= 4 ×  {(7)}^{2}

= 4 × 49

= 196

So, cube has the larger lateral surface = 196 {cm}^{2}
