when water is heated in a pot the water particles touching the bottom of the pot are heated due to conduction. when this particles move upward because hot water is less dense than cold water. the denser cold water sinks ( due to gravity) and pushes the hot water up. this circular motion continues to happen until all the water particles are equally hot. this transfer of heat by the movement of particles in a liquid or a gas is called convection.
