khan was born on 21 march,1916 into a family of traditional muslim musicians in bhirung raut of gali, dumraon, in the eastern india state of Bihar as a second son of paigacmbar khan and mitthan. He was named Quamruddin at birth to rhyme with elder brother .His achievements were Bharat Ratna (2001), Padma Bhushan (1968), Padm vibhushan(1980) and padma shri (1961).
