Ribs:

The ribs help in the expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity and also protect the lungs and heart. When the diaphragm expands or contracts, the thoracic (chest) cavity expands or contracts, alternately pulling in the air (inhalation) or expelling it (exhalation).
