Describe in brief various steps involved in biological nitrogen fixation
Answers
Answer:
Processes that are important stages in the cycle of nitrogen in soils are nitrogen fixation, ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification. Nitrogen fixation is the absorption of elemental nitrogen from the atmosphere (N2) and its incorporation in organic compounds of living organisms.
There are 3 main steps of fixing nitrogen biologically -
1. Fixing nitrogen through atmosphere
In this method, with the help of lightning and UV radiations, the nitrogen and oxygen gets combined and thus leads to formation of oxides of nitrogen.
2. Fixing nitrogen through industries
The combustions that occurs in industries also leads to the production of oxides of nitrogen.
3. Certain microbes are also responsible for fixing nitrogen. So, they are called nitrogen fixers. Examples : Rhizobium, Nostoc, etc.
