Explanation:

It all started when Nawabs lost their power due to lack of unity amongst them against the British.

Many conditions were being placed on the royal families such as the kingdom can only be inherited by the biological son and a few other.

Where as there started an uproar among the sepoys as some of the rules violated their religious sensibilities and beliefs.

In the country side peasants resented the high taxes and the rigid methods of revenue collection.

But there were responses from the British in case of reformation as laws were passed to stop sati and encourage practice of widow remarriage.

A mutiny initiated by mangal pandey rose to rebellion on the issue of the cartridges being coated with pigs and cows fat.

As a result all the sepoys were dismissed and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

The soldiers still were adamant to end British rule,so they proclaimed Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader and marched on.

The rebellion spread to Delhi, Lucknow and Kanpur .

Many former princes, rulers, begum and ranis came together and fought .

The british were greatly outnumbered by the rebel forces.

Finally the company decides to fight back and compress the rebelling forces by passing new laws such as

1.The powers of the east india company was transferred to the british crown.

2.All ruling chiefs of the country were assured that their territories would never be annexed in the future.

3. The number of Indian soldiers in the army were reduced where as the soldiers were brought from England.

4. Policies were made to protect the landlord and zamindars and give them security rights over their lands.

5.The british decided to respect the customary religious and social practices of the people in India.

Thus a new phase of history began after 1857....
