Complex parts, which are otherwise difficult to machine, are made by the casting process using sand mould.
Cast components are stable, rigid and strong compared with machined or forged parts.
Examples of cast components are machine tool beds and structures, cylinder blocks of internal combustion engines, pumps and gear box housings.
General design considerations of casting are as follows:
Design of component in compression than in tension.
Use of External devices for strengthen the part under tension.
Provision of Fillet Radius.
Avoid abrupt changes in the cross-section.
Avoid Concentration of Metal at the Junctions.
Avoid Very Thin Sections.
Shot Blast the Parts wherever Possible.
