Adenosine triphosphate is energy-rich molecule and energy is stored in the bonds by which phosphate groups are attached to each other. These molecules are stored in the cells as per need. Chemically, ATP is triphosphate molecule formed from adenosine ribonucleoside. It contains a nitrogenous compound-adenine, pentose sugar- ribose and three phosphate groups. As per the need, energy is derived by breaking the phosphate bond of ATP; hence ATP is called as ‘energy currency’ of the cell.

- Muscle stores a variety of energy substances, mainly adenosine triphosphate (ATP), creatine phosphate (CP), muscle glycogen and fat.
When ADP combines with phosphate groups and obtains 8 kcal energy, ATP can be formed.
For animals, humans, fungi, and most bacteria, it comes from the energy released by the decomposition of organic matter when the cells perform respiration .
For green plants, in addition to relying on the energy released by respiration, when photosynthesis is carried out in the chloroplast , the conversion of ADP to ATP also uses light energy.
