The Kodagu or Coorg district of Karnataka has many Tibetan settlements:

One of such was in Bylakuppe where they first came to as refugee settlement way back in 1961. After that came the Lugsung Samdupling and they settled in India eventually for next four to five decades.

Slowly and steadily the refugees from Tibet kept on coming into Coorg and their small camps later developed into large settlements. They started establishing schools, nunneries, temples and monasteries and the place became an important center for the Tibetan Buddhism rather than a refuge settlement.

The ‘Tibetan Golden Temple’ is situated on the border of Coorg and is easily accessible from Kushalnagar town. This place provides home to thousands of monks, students and is a major attraction for the visitors who came to Bylakuppe.

After Tibet took control by China, the Tibetans starting coming to India and settled in Bylakuppe in 1972.
