The term ecology may be defined in the following ways –
1. Ecology is that branch of biology which deals with the relations and interactions between the organisms and their environment.

3. Human Ecology is that branch of sociology which is concerned with the interdependence of people and institutions.

Ecology is basically a branch of biology that helps to understand the interrelation of the organisms that are living in a common settlement and their interaction with the surrounding parameters. These parameters include biotic as well as abiotic.
Abiotic parameters include air, soil, water, land and climate etc. basically non-living parameters
Biotic parameters include living being like plants, animals, insects and humans etc.
