India's position in South Asia is centrally and strategically very important.  India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the North-West. Sri Lanka is situated near the Southern tip of India. It is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. Sri Lanka is an island country.

China, Nepal and Bhutan are India's neighbours in the North. India shares a common boundary with Myanmar and Bangladesh in the East. Maldives is an island country situated in the Arabian Sea, to the South of the Lakshadweep Islands.

India had strong geographical and historical links with her neighbours in the past. To this very day, India is still a friendly country for her neighbours and good relations with them.
