India's position in South Asia is centrally and strategically very important.  India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the North-West. Sri Lanka is situated near the Southern tip of India. It is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. Sri Lanka is an island country.
China, Nepal and Bhutan are India's neighbours in the North. India shares a common boundary with Myanmar and Bangladesh in the East. Maldives is an island country situated in the Arabian Sea, to the South of the Lakshadweep Islands.

India had strong geographical and historical links with her neighbours in the past. To this very day, India is still a friendly country for her neighbours and good relations with them.

The position of India in South Asia is geographically very important as it shares borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the North-West. Sri Lanka is at its southern tip and separated by Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. In North, China, Nepal and Bhutan are there. In East, Myanmar and Bangladesh are present.

Indian sub-continent has the following relief features:----

1. The Himalayas
2. The Indo-Gangetic Plain
3. The Peninsular Plateau
4. The Coastal Plains
5. The Thar Desert
6. The Islands
7. The Bay of Bengal
8. The Indian Ocean

Out of the above, The Bay of Bengal, The Indian Ocean & The Arabian Sea contribute significantly in making a long coastline. A huge coastline of about 7500 km has several advantages:-

1. It acts as a natural boundary
2. More water area is available for marine trade
3. Coastal patrolling is not tough as it is easy to demarcate boundary
4. More availability of natural resources like oil rigs, petroleum, thorium etc.
5. It acts as a strategic route for overseas trade
6. More wind power can be generated nearby coastal areas.
7. Enhanced scope for tourism
8. Boosts the natural ecosystem and marine biodiversity
