On April 13, 1919 a public meeting was held at Jallianwala Bagh in protest against the arrest of two leaders Dr Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew. An unarmed crowd of men, women and children had gathered to attend the meeting.[/tex]
As the meeting begun General Dyer arrived on the spot with his troops at the entrance of the Bagh and without any warning ordered the troops to fire upon the crowd. The firing continued for 10 minutes. Nobody could escape as the only exit had been blocked.
Nearly a thousand people died while many more were injured. Curfew was imposed throughout the Punjab.
