At first priestly placed a burning candle and a live mouse inside a bell jar and observed it. Soon the candle extinguished and the mouse suffocated. This showed that the mouse and the candle somehow damaged the air in their presence. However when a mint plant was added to the previous setup the candle did not extinguish and the mouse was also in normal state. Hence it was concluded that plants somehow restore the air that some other source has damaged. This is Priestleys bell jar experiment.
Hope it helps
