Tolerance is the golden word these days. Everyone calls for it, and few people actually seem to have it. This is not a new problem. Mark Twain wrote in his autobiography in 1906: “All the talk about tolerance, in anything or anywhere, is plainly a gentle lie. It does not exist. It is in no man’s heart; but it unconsciously, and by moss-grown inherited habit, drivels and slobbers from all men’s lips.”One of Twain’s greatest gifts was unmasking human hypocrisy. Had he not washed it down with humor, his audience might have hanged him.In his time, of course, intolerance was America’s pastime. If you were black, people considered you inferior and cheated you of your rights. And that was on a good day. Chinese, Irish and Jews fared little better. Today’s America is kinder on these points, but before you congratulate everyone on attaining a higher level of humanity, spend five minutes on social media. Twain’s words aren’t outdated yet. How else would you think World War 2 happened? Now without tolerance our life is subjected to dishonour, hate, ignorance and who knows what in the future. So if we all don't take a step to peace we might live in a world filled with crime and hate.
