The solid portion of the earth is called the lithosphere. The word 'Litho' means rock in Greek. The lithosphere is formed of the earth crust including the Rocks and Minerals and then thin layer of soil containing nutrients essential for living organisms.
Lithosphere is made up of land and water. Land covers about 29% wild water covers rest of the 71% of the Earth's surface.

The large water bodies that Surround the continents are called oceans. All the oceans of the world are connected with one another. The elevation of land is measured from the level of the sea which is taken as zero.
